Understanding High-Risk Pregnancy

A high-risk pregnancy refers to any pregnancy that poses potential risks to the mother or the baby.

There are many factors that contribute to high-risk pregnancy like placenta previa, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and more. Some  of the most common, however, are:

Advanced Maternal Age: Pregnancy at an older age, typically over the age of 35, can increase the risk of complications such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and chromosomal abnormalities.

Pre-existing Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, autoimmune diseases, and heart conditions can increase the risk of complications during pregnancy and require specialized management.

Multiple Pregnancies: Carrying twins, triplets, or higher-order multiples can increase the risk of complications such as preterm birth, low birth weight, and preeclampsia due to the added strain on the mother’s body.

Complications During Previous Pregnancies: Women who have experienced complications in previous pregnancies, such as preterm birth, preeclampsia, placental problems, or miscarriages, may be at higher risk for similar complications in subsequent pregnancies, requiring closer monitoring and management.

Again, there are so many other risk factors for high-risk pregnancies. That’s why it’s important to work closely with an experience OB-GYN so that they can safely guide you through it.

If you are deemed high risk for pregnancy by any of our doctors, rest assured that our high risk pregnancy center’s team will develop a personalized care plan to help you mitigate any potential complications.
